Ask people to picture Pikachu, the yellow creature from the Pokémon cartoons and games, and many give its tail a black tip. It has never had one. The tail is yellow, with a brown patch near the body.
In a 2022 University of Chicago study, people chose between the real picture and altered copies. Many confidently picked the same wrong one: the black-tipped tail.
Pikachu does have black tips. They're on its ears.
