Would you notice a stranger asking directions swapped for a different man?

A young man on a campus asks you for directions. As you explain, two workers carry a door between you.

Behind the door, a different man takes his place. In a 1998 Cornell University study, about half the people kept talking as if nothing had changed.

Students his own age usually noticed. But when he dressed as a construction worker, most students missed the swap. Researchers think they saw "a worker," not a particular person.
