You feel your phone vibrate in your pocket, check it, and find nothing. In different surveys, about 30 to 89 percent of phone users reported these phantom buzzes.
Nobody knows the cause. One idea is that when you expect a call, the cortex, the brain's outer layer, may misread other signals from your body.
So a muscle tightening or the pressure of your clothes could register as the buzz you were waiting for.
