One Fear Test Lost the Threat. Another Still Found It.
After propranolol and a brief fear reminder, a loud-noise blink response no longer clearly separated threat from safety. People's expected-shock ratings still did.

A loud noise and a question produced different results
One fear test stopped clearly telling threat from safety. A second test still could.
Merel Kindt, Marieke Soeter and Bram Vervliet reported the human study in Nature Neuroscience. Volunteers first learned that one cue could bring a shock. Another cue was safe.
One group took propranolol, a drug that blocks some stress signals. About an hour and a half later, they saw the threat cue once as a reminder. Other groups received an inactive pill before the reminder or took propranolol without seeing it.
The next day, a sudden loud noise played while each cue appeared. Researchers measured how hard people blinked after the noise. In the drug-and-reminder group, that response no longer showed a clear difference between the threat and safe cues.
The question test told a different story. Early in the same session, people still rated the threat cue as more likely to bring a shock than the safe cue.
Why researchers called it reconsolidation
Researchers interpreted the result through reconsolidation—the idea that a reminder can make a stored memory open to change before it settles again.
Karim Nader, Glenn Schafe and Joseph LeDoux helped shape that idea in rats. They gave a drug after a fear reminder. It blocked new protein building in the amygdala, a brain area tied to fear. The rats later froze less to the feared tone.
Neither study watched a memory become open. Both inferred that hidden step from the timing of a reminder, a treatment and a later response. A review by James Elsey, Vanessa van Ast and Merel Kindt warned that several causes can fit the same pattern.
A later study did not repeat the eye-blink result
Natalie Schroyens, Tom Beckers and Merel Kindt later tested the effect again. Their team gave propranolol before bringing the fear memory back with a cue. The reminder came about an hour and a half after the drug.
This time, the loud-noise blink response still separated threat from safety at the later test. The expected loss of that difference did not appear.
The failed repeat did not reveal one clear cause. The reminder may not have opened the memory, the drug may not have disrupted it, or the first finding may depend on conditions the later experiment did not recreate.
Fear did not behave like one on-or-off signal
The first experiment did not establish why the two measures diverged. It did show why “the fear was erased” is too simple a description: one measured response changed while another remained.
Someone who says “I know flying is safe” and still flinches during turbulence makes the tension easy to picture. That is an example, not a result from this study. It does not prove that words and reflexes come from separate parts of the mind.
The human surprise is narrower and stranger. Fear was not a single light that one test could declare on or off. In this experiment, changing the way fear was measured changed the story it appeared to tell.
