Elevator Mirrors Made the Wait Feel Shorter

A mirror in an elevator gives you something to do: check your hair, your face, your shopping bags — anything but the floor numbers. The ride is exactly as slow. It just stops feeling that way.

That was the whole trick. By the mid-20th century, building owners wanted a fix for slow elevators, and faster motors meant tearing into shafts and cables.

A sheet of glass was cheaper than a faster elevator.
