Embarrassment can feel like pain

When you're deeply rejected or humiliated, the brain lights up the same regions that process physical pain. That's why a cringe memory from years ago can still make your chest tighten. Social pain wasn't a design flaw — for most of human history, being cast out of the group was a death sentence.
